About the Role
The Python Software Foundation is hiring a contract Sustainability Engineer, PyPI, reporting to the Director of Engineering.
This role focuses on building features in Warehouse, PyPI's codebase, with the goal of helping make PyPI financially sustainable so it does not rely entirely on donations and sponsorships.
PyPI organization accounts launched in 2025 as the first revenue stream, and this role will help expand that foundation.
You will spend most of your time shipping features that support PyPI and the PSF, writing Python, collaborating on packaging standards, and working through practical challenges such as billing integrations, access control, and infrastructure costs.
You will also help shape what PyPI can offer both free users and organizations, balancing revenue generation with the PSF mission.
Core Responsibilities
- Build and ship features in Warehouse, PyPI's codebase
- Work on billing integrations, access control, storage, and CDN systems
- Write Python, review pull requests, and deliver user-facing improvements
- Coordinate with the Infrastructure Engineer on deployment, scaling, and operations
- Collaborate with PSF and PyPI security engineers on security-related features
- Work with the PyPI Support Specialist on organization accounts and escalations
- Interface with PyPI stakeholders to understand community and user needs
- Participate in occasional shared on-call responsibilities for PyPI
Product Responsibilities
- Help define what PyPI offers free users and organizations
- Research commercial offerings and identify where PyPI fits
- Speak with enterprise users and turn needs into valuable features
- Balance sustainability goals with PyPI's mission as free public infrastructure
Standards & Ecosystem
- Work within the Python packaging standards process when features need upstream changes
- Coordinate with the Packaging Council and related stakeholders
Qualifications
Required
- Strong Python experience
- Experience with web frameworks
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Software testing experience
Desired
- PostgreSQL experience
- Strong frontend skills (HTML/CSS/JavaScript)
- Pyramid web framework experience
- Python 3.14+
- Pytest
- Object storage experience
- Familiarity with packaging and CDN architecture
- Product sense and ability to work with enterprise customers

Compensation
- $75,000 to $180,000 USD
- Based on experience and local employment package norms
- US employees eligible for healthcare and other benefits
