Lead Backend Engineer
at TurnTable

(1 week, 2 days ago)

Own the Backbone of TurnTable

The Role

TurnTable is a reservation and ticketing platform built for live jazz venues. We keep rooms full.

As Lead Backend Engineer, you own the systems that make that possible. You are responsible for our Django REST Framework codebase, our AWS production footprint (primarily ECS with some Lambda) and our Stripe integration for payments. You work directly with our VP of Product Development and our frontend engineer to ship features that venues feel every night.

This is a high‑autonomy role. Technical decisions rest with you. Work is well‑scoped before it reaches engineering, and you also sit in the conversations that shape what we build.

The Work

Your work is broad. No single piece is exotic, but all of it matters.

You will:

  • Build and extend backend APIs for bookings, capacity and reporting.
  • Maintain and improve Stripe payment flows, refunds and edge cases.
  • Run and refine background jobs, capacity checks and notifications.
  • Keep AWS infrastructure healthy, observable and reliable.

Roughly 60% of your time is new feature development and 40% is maintenance and refinement. Production incidents are infrequent, but on-call responsibility is part of the role.

How We Work

We are an 8‑person company, four years in, with an office at The Pearl in San Antonio and a remote‑friendly setup. We build for venues that run shows nightly, so we value reliability over flash.

You will find:

  • Minimal bureaucracy and short feedback loops.
  • Direct access to product and design decisions.
  • Clear priorities, shaped by real venue needs.

What You Bring

You have 7+ years of professional experience and write clean, straightforward Python. You are comfortable in Django or a similar framework. You prefer owning a range of systems over going deep in a narrow slice.

It helps if you have:

  • Stripe or other payments integration experience.
  • Experience running production workloads in AWS.
  • Some frontend experience, especially with Vue.
  • Familiarity with websockets, Redis or PostgreSQL.

You like to understand how the business works. You care that your code keeps a real room full and a real band on stage.

Why It’s Worth It

TurnTable is a revenue platform for jazz clubs that care about both art and operations. Venues depend on us to sell every seat they can, every night they open.

In this role, you see a straight line from your work to full rooms, smoother nights and healthier venues. You get the responsibility of owning the backend and the focus of a small team that knows why it’s here.

Compensation

Competitive salary and benefits based on experience. We're a growing company backed by revenue from venues who depend on us nightly.

Desired skills:

AWS, Django REST Framework, Python, Stripe
